Our firm was formed in 1991 by Robert J. Ryan, Jr., Ph.D. and Craig A. Buckhout, CFA, with the vision of applying investment principles to help a broad spectrum of clients move confidently toward their financial goals. Robert J. Ryan
Bob is focused on the design and development of the investment ideas of RJR Associates and their applicability to the financial portfolios of both institutions and individuals. He completed his PhD in finance at Syracuse University in 1989 and was awarded an MBA with distinction from Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management in 1971. Bob’s professional experience includes over twenty years with NYSE and Fortune 500 companies in all facets of corporate finance. He has been a director of several corporate boards, including food processing, international trade, insurance and banking concerns. Bob has also served on the faculty of Syracuse University where he taught graduate and undergraduate courses in securities markets and corporate finance. Bob and his wife, Linda, enjoy spending time at their family retreat on Lake Champlain in Vermont, and he marvels at the insights on the human condition provided by John Prine and Henry David Thoreau.
Craig A. Buckhout, CFA
Craig works with a broad mix of RJR Associates’ clients and is particularly interested in the development and implementation of 401(k) plans. Together with Bob Ryan, he founded Disciplined Capital Management in 1991 to manage investment portfolios for a broad spectrum of clients. Craig earned an MBA from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University where he also earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics. Additionally, he is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). Craig's professional experience includes several years as President of the insurance and financial services subsidiaries of Dairylea Cooperative preceded by several years with another farm cooperative in operational and corporate management, financial management and bank relations, and mergers and acquisitions. Craig has been rowing since his days as an undergraduate, when he rowed in a national championship eight and was commodore (captain) of the crew. He can now be found on Cazenovia Lake many summer mornings and continues to row his single scull competitively.
Ted J. Scallon, MBA
Ted is Executive Vice President of Business Development for RJR Associates where he oversees the development of new client relationships for the firm’s institutional business. He has more than 50 years of banking experience in New York City and throughout the Central New York region. Ted, along with Bob Ryan, founder of RJR Associates, help boards and investment committees of foundations and institutions, as well as individuals, manage financial assets by developing reasonable expectations for return while better understanding risk and how it is measured. Ted holds a BS in business management and an MBA in finance from Long Island University. He and his wife, Sally, live in Fayetteville where they raised their three children T.J. (aged 36), Mark (aged 33) and Gemma (age 30). Ted has long been involved with the community’s not-for-profit community and currently serves as the Board Vice President of Elmcrest Children’s Center and as a member of the Board of Regents of LeMoyne College.
Patti Edwards
Patti is responsible for client services of RJR Associates. She joined RJR with over 30 years business experience, the last 15 with specific responsibility for transfer agent and investor relations functions associated with the $500 million stock and debenture program of a large northeast farm cooperative. She is a graduate of Onondaga Community College with an AAS in Business Administration and successfully completed NASD Series 63 requirements to qualify as a securities state agent. Patti and her husband, Earle, enjoy relaxing and entertaining year round at their lake house in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, which has affectionately come to be known by friends and family as "The Hotel Edwards."
Anthony Farella, CFP®, AIF®
Tony’s passion is working with and educating our clients on establishing goals, determining risk tolerance and implementing sound investment strategies. An area of focus for Tony is designing and implementing employer sponsored retirement plans. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Syracuse University and has obtained his Certified Financial PlannerTM and Accredited Investment FiduciaryTM certifications. As a graduate of Leadership – Greater Syracuse, Tony shares a vision of a better and more vibrant community in Central New York. His 2006 class has designed and implemented a mentoring program in the Syracuse City School district to help at-risk children envision a successful future. He and his wife, Anne, enjoy many family activities with their son and daughter.
Julie Murfitt
Julie is responsible for marketing, client services and administrative support for RJR Associates. She has over 15 years' business experience with specific strengths in the utilization of computer technology and employee benefits administration. She has experience in the areas of finance, insurance, employee benefits, and sales and marketing. Her expertise has been instrumental in streamlining administrative processes and improving communication with our clients. She graduated with highest honors from Tompkins Cortland Community College with an AAS in Secretarial Science, and was a member of various Faculty Student and Finance Committee boards. Julie resides in the country with her husband and three children and enjoys crafts, sewing and volunteering at her children's schools.
Mary Habib, M.S. Ed.
Mary is responsible for a wide array of specialized client relationships for RJR Associates as well as providing computer systems and network support for the firm. Mary received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Alfred University and also earned a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from SUNY Oswego. Her professional experience includes several years as an auditor with a national CPA firm, followed by a career in corporate finance with an international pharmaceutical manufacturer based in New York City. Mary, her husband, Curtis, and their two cats, Jake and Molly, enjoy living in the City of Syracuse where the architecture and landscape provide many opportunities for her to practice her amateur photography skills.
